So you’re thinking about starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)? Maybe you’ve heard a friend talk about it, watched a UFC fight, or just want a new way to challenge yourself. Stepping onto the mats for the first time can feel exciting—but also a little intimidating. That’s why we’ve put together this complete beginner’s guide to Jiu Jitsu, so you’ll know exactly what to expect on your journey, even if it’s not at Veritas Jiu Jitsu in Edmond Oklahoma.
What Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art focused on grappling and ground fighting. Instead of relying on size or strength, BJJ uses leverage, technique, and strategy to control opponents and apply submissions such as chokes and joint locks. It’s often called the “gentle art” because it allows a smaller person to defend themselves against a larger opponent through skill.
BJJ isn’t just for fighters or athletes—it’s for anyone looking to build confidence, improve fitness, and challenge their mind. Jiu Jitsu is for everyone!
Why Start Jiu Jitsu?
There are many reasons people step onto the mats:
Self-defense – Learn how to protect yourself with proven techniques.
Fitness – Improve strength, endurance, flexibility, and overall health.
Stress relief – Training requires total focus, making it a great way to unplug.
Community – BJJ gyms are filled with supportive, like-minded people. Veritas Jiu Jitsu has a strong family unit! Finding a gym at feels like a second home is a must!

Water bottle – Stay hydrated.
Flip-flops or slides – Worn off the mat to keep mats clean.

What to Expect in Your First Class
Your first class will usually include:
Warm-up – Movements like shrimping, bridging, or rolling to prepare your body.
Technique – Instructors demonstrate a move step-by-step, then you practice with a partner.
Drills – Repetition to help the technique “stick.”
Rolling (sparring) – Some gyms let beginners roll right away, others wait until you’re more comfortable. Rolling is where you apply techniques against a resisting partner.
Don’t worry about being perfect—everyone starts as a beginner. Your only job is to listen, learn, and keep showing up! At Veritas Jiu Jitsu we offer multiple Private lesson specials to help you leant the basics movements and positions for your first class.
Tips for Beginners
Consistency is key – The more you train, the quicker you’ll progress.
Tap early, tap often – Submissions are a learning tool, not a failure. Tapping keeps you safe.
Leave your ego at the door – Some days you’ll win, some days you’ll get submitted. Both help you grow.
Ask questions – Your coaches and teammates are there to help.
Focus on fundamentals – Fancy moves don’t matter without a strong foundation.
How Long Does It Take to Get Good?
Progress in BJJ is different for everyone, but with consistent training, you’ll notice improvements in just a few months. Belts in Jiu Jitsu take time to earn, but the real reward is the progress you see on the mat—better movement, better problem-solving, and more confidence.
