Getting your first Jiu Jitsu gi is a big milestone — it marks the start of your journey on the mats. Whether you just signed up for your first class or recently joined the Veritas BJJ family, learning how to properly care for your gi will help it last longer, stay fresh, and look sharp every time you train.
Choosing Your First Gi
When picking your first gi, focus on comfort and fit. You’ll want something that allows you to move freely without being too baggy or too tight. A well-fitted gi helps you perform better and gives your training partners less material to grab onto.
A few tips when choosing your first gi:
• Check the size chart. Each brand fits differently. Try it on before washing to ensure the sleeves and pants are the right length.
• Pick a lighter weight if you train often. Lightweight gis dry faster and feel cooler during intense classes.
• Stick with white, blue, or black. These are the most commonly accepted colors for both training and competition.
Proper Gi Fit Guidelines
When you first try on your gi, keep in mind that it may shrink slightly after the first few washes — especially if it’s made of cotton.
Here’s how it should fit:
• Sleeve length: When your arms are straight at your sides, the sleeve cuffs should fall no more than 1 inch (2.5 cm) above your wrist bone and not below the wrist bone.
• Pant length: When standing, the pant cuffs should rest just above your ankles — no higher than 2 inches (5 cm) above your ankle bone and not dragging on the floor.
• Jacket fit: The jacket should wrap around comfortably and overlap enough to cover your torso when tied. It shouldn’t feel tight across your shoulders or restrict movement.
A proper fit means you can move easily, grip naturally, and look professional on the mats.
Caring for Your Gi
Your gi will take a lot of wear and tear — sweat, friction, and constant pulling — so good care is key to keeping it in top shape.
•Wash After Every Class
Never leave your gi in your bag after training. Always wash it right away on cold to prevent bacteria buildup and to avoid shrinking.
•Avoid the Dryer
Heat causes cotton gis to shrink and stiffen. Always air dry your gi — hang it in a well-ventilated space or outside if possible.
⚠️ Never dry the top in the dryer. The jacket will almost always shrink, even on low heat.
Use the Right Products
•Detergent: Choose a mild detergent without bleach or fabric softeners.
•Disinfectant: Add a small amount of Lysol Laundry Sanitizer or white vinegar to the wash to help kill odor-causing bacteria.
•Avoid harsh chemicals: They break down the fabric and shorten the life of your gi.
•Keep It Smelling Fresh
If your gi still smells after washing, soak it in a mix of cold water and white vinegar (1 cup per gallon of water) for 30 minutes, then wash as normal.
•Hang It Right
Hang your gi on a sturdy hanger or drying rack to keep its shape. Folding while damp can cause mildew or wrinkles that are hard to remove.
Bonus Tip: Have More Than One Gi
If you train several times a week, consider owning two gis. That way, you always have a clean one ready while the other dries — and your gear lasts much longer overall.
Final Thoughts
Your gi is more than just training gear — it’s part of your identity on the mats. Taking the time to care for it shows respect for your teammates, your academy, and the art of Jiu Jitsu itself. With the right fit and proper care, your gi will serve you well through countless rolls and milestones in your training journey.
